Johalla Teams Up With Sixty Inches From Center

Johalla Projects is excited to once again team up with our good friends over at Sixty Inches From Center (SIFC), the renowned, Chicago-based arts archive and collective.

This time, we’re working with SIFC to help restore a public mural by artists Nick Adam and Thor that was originally begun in October of 2009 at the Logan Square Blue Line stop. The mural, entitled “Home,” uniquely serves as a visual expansion of the home that extends to the neighborhood. It raises awareness and is a reminder that our public space is where we live as well. It is a welcome-mat inviting life, love, growth, investment, respect, and care. It’s these characteristics of home that lend themselves towards thriving and prosperous communities. After all, we think that public art should translate to anyone that experiences it, so the creative vision for this project is for the artists to compose a combination of literal and abstract representations that play on the sentiment of “home”.

However, on its last day of installment a large storm hit and destroyed the mural up to its installation point. Because of this tragic event, some of the initial sponsors had to withdraw funding due to the lack of promotions.

SO, with the fabulous help of Sixty Inches From Center and Alderman Rey Colon, we are IMMENSELY enthusiastic about raising the remaining funds needed to complete the mural at a soon-to-be-announced fundraiser!

So, please stay tuned and keep your eyes and ears open for an upcoming event…We’ll be back soon to give you more information and hope you can join us!

LAKEVIEW ARTS FESTIVAL 2011: JOHALLA PROJECTS

Matthew Hoffman

Johalla Projects is formally hosting an emerging art area at the Lakeview Arts Festival. Johalla Projects is a group of artists and curators that manage an independent project space. The collective, which was established in the fall of 2009 by Anna Cerniglia, is a venue for emerging and mid-career artists.

In conjunction with the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce, Johalla Projects aims to attract new business, provide entertainment, and bring the art community and its supporters to this corridor of Lakeview. Johalla will collaborate with artists, each of whom will create an installation-based exhibit consisting of crafts, posters, toy art and more.
The Johalla Projects section of the Lakeview Arts Festival will emulate a car sales lot with creative signage and flags. The section will include organizations and artists such as Chicago Zine Fest, Rebecca Rar Rar Press, Steff Bomb, Matthew Hoffman, Brooks Golden, Adie Janci, Reckless Records, Graham Cracker Comics and a Poster Alley featuring Ryan Duggan, Johnny Sampson, Rick Leech and Josh Davis.

Some displays to look forward to: at the entrance to the designated Johalla Projects space, there will be two large, silver deer sculptures by Andrea Jablonski, taken from our Urban Dwellers public installation. Also, artist Steff Bomb will make a large, fabric drum set on which children can play, and Chicago Zine Fest will set up a workshop table. There will be workshops explaining book-binding zines and one-page zines. Zines are an effective, though unconventional, way to show one’s art without publications. It has successfully provided a national platform for many artists. Additionally, Rick Leech will be demonstrating printmaking. We will also be serenaded by music from DJ British Knights! These are just a few of the displays that will be featured in the Johalla Projects area of the Lakeview Arts Festival.

Our installation is located at Broadway and Roscoe

hours: 10-6 on Saturday

10-5 on Sunday!

Urban Dwellers

“The shape of things to come. Nature adapts to the ever-changing neon lit/concrete jungle of the modern world.”

Johalla Projects is proud to announce Urban Dwellers by Andrea Jablonski, in collaboration with Vicki Fuller of VLF Development. Urban Dwellers, large, silver-glittered deer installations, have been placed in an empty lot off of a highly visible and congested street. These structures are meant to serve as a reminder of nature and what may have existed previously, before urban development. Ms. Fuller approached Johalla Projects for this partnership with the goal of enriching the vacant lots near her business, which focuses on urban planning and development. Urban Dwellers debuts the week of June 6, 2011. Johalla Projects is excited to continue collaborating with Ms. Fuller. Please, keep your eyes open for future projects.
